Madan Theatres' Dhruva (1933), with music by Brijlal Varma, brought the Puranic legend of Dhruva — the child-devotee who through tapasya won divine grace and was immortalised as the Pole Star — to the sound screen. Jehanara Kajjan, one of the era's most celebrated singer-actresses, featured in the film, lending her musical training to devotional songs that would have drawn on Vaishnavite bhajan tradition and the pathos of Dhruva's rejection and eventual triumph.
