'Bhigoi Mori Saari Re' is a playful duet sung by Khursheed and Ishwarlal in the 1941 Ranjit Movietone film Shaadi, with music by Khemchand Prakash. A teasing rain song — the soaked saree as romantic pretext — it is one of the most frequently revisited numbers from the film in writing about early Khemchand Prakash and Khursheed.

The Poetry

The monsoon song—savan ka geet, barkha ka geet—is one of the oldest and most formally codified traditions in Hindi and Braj Bhasha poetry, stretching from Surdas's rain-longing to the Rasoiya poets' monsoon imagery. The drenched sari (bheegi saari) is a central image in this tradition: the cloth that clings to the body in rain makes beauty visible in a way that dry clothes do not, and this visibility is simultaneously erotic, social, and poetic. In the Braj and Awadhi folk songs known as kajri, the rain becomes a pretext for reunion, for desire, for the arrival of the beloved. Khursheed Bano's voice—known for its vivid expressiveness in folk and thumri-influenced material—was ideally suited to this type of playful exchange, and the duet structure, in which Ishwarlal's voice responds to hers, enacts the monsoon's own call-and-response: rain and thunder, longing and arrival.

The Story

Shaadi (1941) was a social family drama directed by Jayant Desai and produced by Ranjit Movietone—one of Bombay's leading studios of the 1930s and 1940s, known for high-quality family entertainments. The film was released on July 12, 1941, at the Royal Opera House in Bombay, one of the era's most prestigious premiere venues. The cast included Madhuri, Motilal, Khursheed Bano, and Ishwarlal, with all fourteen songs composed by Khemchand Prakash. 'Bhigoi Mori Saari Re'—'My sari is drenched'—is a monsoon rain duet sung by Khursheed and Ishwarlal, a song that contemporary reports noted for its 'lovely tune' and its 'glimpse of modernity'—a reference to the playful physical proximity implied by a soaked sari in mixed-gender company. Rain duets were a convention of 1940s Hindi cinema that tested the boundaries of propriety through the liberating agency of the monsoon: what social norms could not permit, the rain made possible.

The Legacy

Khursheed Bano (also known as Khursheed Begum) was among the most celebrated singer-actresses of the pre-independence Hindi film industry, particularly associated with Ranjit Movietone productions and Khemchand Prakash's music. Her performances in Pardesi (1941) and Shaadi (1941)—both scored by Prakash—defined her commercial peak and established her as the era's leading female voice in folk-inflected romantic song. 'Bhigoi Mori Saari Re' is one of the surviving songs from this period that has remained accessible through audio preservation efforts, and its cheerful energy has kept it in discussion among enthusiasts of 1940s Hindi film music. Ranjit Movietone's productions from the early 1940s are among the better-preserved archives of this decade, giving songs like this one a longer documentary life than many contemporaries from smaller studios.
