Atana is identified by its vakra (zigzag) arohana that leaps directly from Ga to Pa, then from Pa to Ni and Dha before reaching upper Sa — skipping Ma in the main ascending movement. The descent flows smoothly through all seven shuddha swaras. This characteristic leap S R G P N D N S gives the raag its bold, heroic surge.

Historical Significance

Raag Atana is a celebrated janya raag of Dheera Shankarabharanam, the 29th melakarta in Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta scheme (Chakra 5 — Bana chakra). Dheera Shankarabharanam employs all seven shuddha (natural) swaras, making it structurally identical to the Hindustani Bilawal thaat — and Atana therefore maps cleanly to Bilawal. The name 'Atana' derives from Sanskrit, meaning 'that which is stretched' or 'expanded across [a wide range],' an apt description of its wide, leaping melodic contour. Atana is distinguished by its vakra (oblique) arohana: the ascent skips Ma in the primary movement, leaping G–P–N, which imparts a powerful, surging quality associated with Veera (heroic/valiant) rasa. Saint-composer Tyagaraja (1767–1847) composed celebrated kritis in Atana, including Atu Brovavamma (O Mother, come to protect me!), which remains a concert staple. Atana is a popular raag for elaborate Pallavis in Carnatic concerts, and great vocalists including M.S. Subbulakshmi and G.N. Balasubramaniam have rendered landmark performances in this raag. It is traditionally performed in the late afternoon and early evening.

More to Know

In Film Music

Raag Atana's powerful, heroic character has been occasionally employed in South Indian film music (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada), particularly in period dramas and devotional films. In Hindi film music, its use is rare — its all-natural-swar structure is similar to Bilawal and composers may have drawn on this character without explicitly naming the raag. No definitively documented mainstream Hindi film song is composed purely in Atana.
