Amaravathi, commonly cited as a janya of Natabhairavi (mela 20), uses shuddha Re, komal Ga (sometimes omitted), shuddha Ma, Pa, komal Dha, and komal Ni — a note set corresponding to the Asavari thaat family. The phrase given here is the characteristic ascending-descending movement of this melodic type; it is drawn from the Natabhairavi melakarta scale rather than a documented historical pakad, and should be treated as a characteristic family phrase.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Amaravathi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Historical Significance

Raag Amaravathi (also spelled Amaravati) takes its name from the legendary celestial city of Amaravati — the abode of Indra (Svarga), described in the Puranas as a paradise of eternal blossoms, divine music, and perpetual spring. The same name belongs to the ancient historical city on the Krishna River in present-day Andhra Pradesh, one of the great centers of Buddhist art (2nd century BCE–3rd century CE) and later a major Shaiva temple town. In Carnatic music, Amaravathi is most commonly cited as a janya raag of Natabhairavi (mela 20, chakra 4 — Veda chakra). The Natabhairavi melakarta uses shuddha Rishabha, komal Gandhara, shuddha Madhyama, Panchama, komal Dhaivata, and komal Nishada — a note set that corresponds to the Asavari thaat in Hindustani music. The raag evokes the grandeur and divine beauty of the celestial abode, often used in compositions dedicated to Vishnu and Indra.

In Film Music

Raag Amaravathi has no documented presence in Hindi film music. As an obscure Carnatic janya raag from the Natabhairavi family, it has not been adopted by Hindi film composers. Its Asavari-equivalent note set does appear in other forms in Hindi cinema, but Amaravathi specifically is confined to South Indian classical concerts.
