Mala is a 1941 Prakash Pictures social drama directed by Balwant Bhatt, starring Rose, P. Jairaj and Jayant. Its lasting interest lies less in its plot than in its place in music history: it was among the very first films scored by Naushad Ali, who would go on to become one of Hindi cinema's defining composers. Lyrics were supplied by D.N. Madhok and Baalam Pardesi.

Mala arrived in Naushad's debut year, when the young composer was still proving himself in the Bombay studios. Within three years he would deliver the colossal hit Rattan (1944); within a decade, Baiju Bawra would cement his stature. Mala thus belongs to the formative phase of one of the most important composing careers in Hindi cinema.
