A social drama produced by Indian Art Productions and directed by Mohan Bhavnani, Trapped (Farebi Jaal) tells a story of deception and emotional entanglement in a contemporary setting. The film is remembered less for its plot than for the landmark it marks: the screen debut of Durga Khote, one of the most respected actresses of the coming decades, who sang her own three songs on camera — a common necessity of the early talkie era, when no playback system yet existed.

Six songs recorded live on camera in 1931; no playback system existed. Master Vasant, serving simultaneously as the film's music director and on-screen performer, composed and sang three songs. Durga Khote sang the remaining three — a remarkable circumstance given that she was a classically trained woman from a distinguished Brahmin family, entering a profession then considered socially beneath her station.

Durga Khote's entry into cinema in 1931 caused a social stir: a woman of her background — educated, upper-caste, widowed — choosing the screen broke powerful taboos. Indian Art Productions offered her a vehicle that allowed her both dramatic and musical expression. Director Mohan Bhavnani, who had trained in Germany and had experience with early sound technology, was a natural collaborator for a film that demanded technically competent live singing from its lead.

Farebi Jaal marks the talkie debut of Durga Khote, who would go on to be one of Hindi and Marathi cinema's most distinguished actresses across five decades. In a pre-playback age, she sang three of the six songs on screen with her own voice — a feat that reveals both the versatility demanded of early talkie performers and the high-born, educated background that made Khote unusual among film women of that era. Music director Master Vasant doubled as performer, singing the remaining three songs.

Farebi Jaal belongs to a vanishingly small group of 1931 films documented as part of Durga Khote's early career. Most prints of early Indian talkies are lost, and this film is likely among them. Yet its documented existence confirms the arc of Khote's debut year and preserves the extraordinary fact that one of Indian cinema's greatest character actresses first appeared on screen as her own singing voice — unmediated, live, and irreproducible.
