Synopsis

Dard-E-Jigar, whose subtitle 'Songs of Sorrow' signals its lyrical-melodic ambition, was a romantic drama from Sharda Film Company, one of Bombay's established early talkie studios. Starring Khalil and Nurjahan (the pre-Partition singer-actress active in 1930s Bombay, distinct from the Pakistani legend Noor Jehan), the film drew on the tradition of Urdu romantic verse and musical storytelling that characterised the first generation of Hindi talkies. Sharda Film Company produced several important early talkies from its Bombay base, and Dard-E-Jigar represents the studio's engagement with the romantic musical form that would dominate Indian cinema through the decade.

Sharda Film Company's early talkie output helped establish the romantic musical as a core genre of Hindi cinema. The Urdu lyrical tradition embedded in films like Dard-E-Jigar directly shaped the ghazal-song aesthetic that would flourish through the 1930s and '40s.
