Sharda Film Company's Dard-E-Jigar (1931), whose very subtitle 'Songs of Sorrow' announces its lyrical ambition, represents the early talkie's inheritance from Urdu romantic verse and Parsi theatre song culture. Stars Khalil and Nurjahan brought their stage-trained musical abilities to the microphone. The Urdu ghazal-influenced register, full of the idioms of heartbreak and longing, would remain a defining strand of Hindi film music well into the Golden Era.
