The Monographजीवनी Biography

Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1922 – 5 September 1995) was one of Indian cinema's most versatile composers, active across Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam and several other film industries over four decades. Born in a village near Baruipur in Bengal, he grew up partly in the Assam tea gardens where his father worked as a doctor, absorbing both Western classical records from his father's collection and the folk and IPTA (Indian People's Theatre Association) music of rural Bengal — an eclectic grounding that shaped his distinctive orchestration style. He entered Hindi films in 1953 when Hrishikesh Mukherjee introduced his script and songs to director Bimal Roy, resulting in Do Bigha Zamin (1953), which won an International Prize at Cannes. He went on to score more than 75 Hindi films, most famously Bimal Roy's Madhumati (1958) — source of this batch's "Aaja Re Pardesi," "Suhana Safar Aur Yeh Mausam Haseen," "Dil Tadap Tadap Ke" and "Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dole" — for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. He also composed the score for Raj Kapoor's Jagte Raho (1956), which includes the Lata Mangeshkar bhajan "Jago Mohan Pyare." Other notable Hindi credits include Parakh (1960) and Half Ticket (1962). Proficient on flute, piano and esraj, Chowdhury was also a published Bengali poet and lyricist. He later received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1988) and was honoured posthumously by Bangladesh. He died in Calcutta in 1995.
