Kikubhai Desai was primarily a film producer and director rather than a professional lyricist. He owned Paramount Studios in Bombay (later known as Filmalaya) from 1931 to 1941, where he specialised in stunt and fantasy pictures such as Dacoit (1931), Sinhal Dweep Ki Sundari (1937) and The Golden Gang (1939). He directed the Paramount comedy-fantasy Sheikh Chilli (1942), and it is through this film that he enters the song record: he is credited with the lyrics of its songs, including "Hua Hai Shor Gulshan Me", "Ban Than Ke Naveli Jal Bharne Jaungi" and "Zakhmo Se Kaleje Ko Bhar De", set to music by Khan Mastana and Damodar Sharma. Desai's more lasting legacy came through his family: he was the father of Manmohan Desai, one of the most successful directors of 1970s–80s Hindi cinema, while his elder son Subhash Desai became a noted producer.
