Biography

Datta Korgaonkar, credited on Hindi films as K. Datta, was born on 4 June 1908 in Sawantwadi in the Konkan region. He grew up steeped in devotional music, influenced by his mother, a respected bhajan singer, and performed at Ganesh festival gatherings and local fairs in his youth before co-founding the music school Gayan Kala Mandir together with singer Sadashiv Nevrekar.

He entered the film industry as a music director in Marathi cinema, making his debut with Chandrarao Morey (1938), and crossed into Hindi films the following year with Mera Haq (1939). Working independently as K. Datta, he went on to score roughly 17 Hindi films between the late 1930s and 1965, including Alakh Niranjan (1940), Geeta (1940), Yaad (1942), Maharathi Karna (1944), Badi Maa (1945), Shaahkaar (1947), Rangmahal (1948), Daman (1951), Rishta (1954), and Ajanabi (1966), alongside a dozen Marathi-language films.

Korgaonkar was noted for his admiration of singer Noor Jehan's voice, composing around eleven songs for her in films including Nadan (1943) and Badi Maa (1945), and he is credited with giving the young Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle some of their earliest opportunities as chorus singers. He retired from film composing after 1965 to devote himself to bhajan singing, worship, and astrology, and died in Bombay on 23 December 1978 following a heart attack.
