The characteristic phrase opens on komal Gandhar, rises through Ma and Pa, then descends via komal Nishad back to Pa before settling gently through Ma and Ga to Sa. The entire movement uses only five notes — Sa, komal Ga, Ma, Pa, komal Ni — and the absence of Re and Dha creates the raag's defining spaciousness and peace.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Dhanyasi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Historical Significance

Raag Dhanyasi is a celebrated pentatonic (audava-audava) janya raag in the Carnatic classical tradition, derived from the 20th melakarta Natabhairavi. Natabhairavi belongs to the 4th chakra (Veda chakra) of Venkatamakhi's 72-melakarta system, occupying the 2nd position within that chakra. The raag uses only five notes in both ascent and descent — Sa, komal Gandhar (G2 in Carnatic notation), Madhyam, Pancham, and komal Nishad — with Re and Dha entirely omitted, creating a melancholic, introspective soundscape. The closest Hindustani thaat to its parent melakarta's note-set is Asavari (Sa, Shuddha Re, komal Ga, Shuddha Ma, Pa, komal Dha, komal Ni), though Dhanyasi itself selects only a pentatonic subset. The raag has been sung in the temple traditions of South India and features prominently in the compositions of Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri. Tyagaraja's kriti 'Nannu Brova Radha' is among the most performed compositions in Dhanyasi. The raag is also used in Sopana sangeetam (Kerala temple music) and has entered the light-classical film music of Tamil and Telugu cinema.

In Film Music

Raag Dhanyasi has found its primary film presence in Tamil and Telugu cinema rather than Hindi films. Its serene, devotional character has suited temple scenes and emotional moments in South Indian film music, where composers like M. S. Viswanathan and Ilayaraja have employed it effectively. In Hindi cinema, Dhanyasi's note-set (pentatonic with komal Ga and komal Ni) is occasionally approximated in devotional or reflective compositions, but it is rarely credited by name. The raag remains largely a concert-hall treasure in North India.
