चंदन

Chandan is a 1941 Hindi social-musical directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The film is most significant today not for its plot — which is poorly documented in surviving records — but as the screen on which a young instrumentalist named S. N. Tripathi made his debut as an independent music director, scoring a twelve-song soundtrack to the verse of Pandit Indra.

The twelve-song score was composed entirely by S. N. Tripathi to lyrics by Pandit Indra. The principal playback voices were Rajkumari (heard on several solos and duets), Aashiq Hussain, the singer Mumtaz, Baby Lalita Rao, and Tripathi himself, who sang the now-remembered duet 'Nanha Sa Dil Deti Hoon' alongside Rajkumari.

By 1941 S. N. Tripathi was already an accomplished player and assistant in Bombay's studios; Chandan was the picture on which producer-director Dhirubhai Desai handed him sole charge of the music. It was a low-budget social film, and Tripathi's debut score went largely unnoticed by the trade — yet it launched one of the most enduring composing careers of the studio era.

Chandan marks the debut of S. N. Tripathi as an independent music director — the start of a long composing career that would later give Hindi cinema the mythological and historical scores of the 1950s and 60s. For that reason alone the film holds a fixed place in any chronology of Hindi film music, even though prints of the film itself are not known to survive.

While Chandan itself faded, its composer did not. S. N. Tripathi went on to score over a hundred films across four decades, becoming the definitive musical voice of Hindi mythological and devotional cinema (Sampoorna Ramayan, Rani Roopmati, Sangeet Samrat Tansen). Chandan is where that story begins.
