The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of the twelve songs from Chandan (1941), with Pandit Indra's lyrics and S. N. Tripathi's debut score. The sitar imagery of the title is apt for Tripathi, who was an accomplished instrumentalist before turning composer; the song speaks of hope resonating in the strings. The playback singer is not documented in available records.
The Poetry

The full title — "Teri mithi baje sitar, tar mein asha ki jhankar" (Your sweet sitar plays; in its strings rings the resonance of hope) — constructs a portrait of longing through a precisely observed musical image. The sitar's taraf (sympathetic strings) vibrate in resonance when neighbouring strings are played, without being directly plucked — hope, in Pandit Indra's metaphor, is this sympathetic resonance: it sounds not when directly sought but when life, like a string, is played. "Jhankar" (resonance, tinkling echo) is the same word used in classical poetry for the sound of anklets and bangles, linking musical sound to the beloved's bodily presence and to the memory of hearing her move. The title's internal music — soft syllables of "mithi" (sweet) and "jhankar" together — has an onomatopoeic quality that echoes the instrument's own tone. For S. N. Tripathi, who had entered cinema as a violinist, a sitar-themed lyric for his debut film connected his musical biography to his first independent composition in a way that was more than coincidental.
The Story

Chandan (1941) was the debut film as independent composer for Shambhu Nath Tripathi (S. N. Tripathi, born 14 March 1913, Varanasi), who had trained at the Morris College of Music in Lucknow — V. N. Bhatkhande's conservatory, which codified modern Hindustani music notation — and then moved to Bombay in 1935. He spent approximately four years at Bombay Talkies as a violinist assisting Saraswati Devi, whose credits included landmark social films like Achhut Kanya (1936). This apprenticeship grounded him in the hybrid classical-popular idiom Bombay Talkies was refining. Chandan (1941) was directed by Dhirubhai Desai and had twelve songs. Lyricist Pandit Indra (Chandra), born in Churu, Rajasthan, had been working in Bombay since 1933 and was a prolific and versatile voice by the time he wrote for Chandan — eight years of accumulated practice showed in his precise, accessible lyric economy.
The Legacy

S. N. Tripathi's career extended far beyond the Chandan debut — he ultimately composed music for approximately 110 films, directed 20 films, and appeared as an actor in approximately 40 films. He became especially celebrated as the screen performer of Hanuman in a series of mythological productions beginning with Shri Ram Bhakta Hanuman (1948), a role that defined his public persona for millions of viewers. He is credited with the first use of "Jai Hind" in a film song, in "Jai Hind Jai Hind" from Mansarovar (1946). He died on 28 March 1988 in Bandra. Pandit Indra Chandra continued to write prolifically, eventually becoming an in-house lyricist at Gemini Films in Madras; a road in Mumbai was named "Kavivar Pandit Indra Marg" in his honour. The songs of Chandan (1941) remain the earliest documented chapter of Tripathi's compositional biography.
