When Jugnu (1947) was released, Mohammed Rafi was already known in Punjabi film circles — but this duet with Noor Jehan, the dominant female voice of the era, announced him nationally. Feroz Nizami's composition gave both singers complementary material: Noor Jehan's ornate, classically grounded phrases against Rafi's smoother, more direct delivery. That the younger voice held its own was a revelation. Within five years, Rafi would be the unquestioned king of Hindi playback singing.

Tanveer Naqvi's lyric turns on a philosophical paradox that the classical ghazal tradition handles with particular elegance: faithfulness (wafa) repaid not with its kind but with betrayal (bewafai). The title phrase 'yahan badla wafa ka bewafai se' — here, loyalty's return is disloyalty — does not describe a personal grievance but a structural condition of the world. 'Yahan' (here, in this world) signals that what follows is a general truth, not a specific complaint. The second line deepens this: grief (gham) arrives from the very invocations of love ('pyar ki duhai se' — from the pleas of love). The grammar of the complaint is elegantly doubled — love itself, the thing you call upon, delivers the pain. Naqvi sets this abstract argument in a duet form, the male voice stating the grievance and the female voice responding from a different emotional position, so the song enacts what it describes: two people, each faithful, each receiving something other than what they gave.
