The Monographपरिचय Overview

“Bhajan and Theatre Song Sides — K. C. Dey” represents the c. 1928 Gramophone Company discs of Calcutta's blind stage star — kirtan and bhajan plainness perfected on shellac, four years before New Theatres made him one of the Indian talkie's first singing legends.
The Music

K. C. Dey's voice was an instrument of plain-spoken ache — no salon filigree, just a fervent, reedy directness that made a kirtan refrain feel like a hand on the shoulder. The microphone loved it: his late-1920s sides carry an intimacy the stage could only suggest.
The Poetry

His repertoire braided Bengal's kirtan with Hindi bhajan — Radha's longing, the devotee's plea — texts older than copyright, sung with the authority of one who had found in bhakti both vocation and consolation for the dark.
The Story

Blinded in adolescence, Krishna Chandra Dey turned to music and conquered the Calcutta stage of the 1920s, where audiences came to plays partly to hear him sing. His discs spread that fame beyond Bengal. In 1932 he would walk into B. N. Sircar's New Theatres and become one of the first singing stars of Indian talkies — with a young nephew, Manna Dey, watching and learning at home.
The Legacy

K. C. Dey's pre-film discs are the foundation of one of Indian film music's great genealogies: his own talkie songs, his pupil S. D. Burman, his nephew Manna Dey. The devotional plainness he perfected on these sides became a template for the film bhajan.
