The Monographपरिचय Overview

In Mirza Sahiban (1947) Noor Jehan sang of separation as the country itself was separating; within months she left for Pakistan, and this lament became, in retrospect, her parting gift to Indian cinema — the qissa's grief and history's folded into one record.

Qamar's afsana frame: parting narrated as a tale told to the beloved.
The Story

Mirza Sahiban (1947), directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal, was based on one of Punjab's four great tragic folk romances — the love story of Mirza and Sahiban that ends in the lovers' deaths. The film was produced in Bombay with Lahore sensibilities: music director Pandit Amarnath drew on Punjabi folk cadences, and Noor Jehan — the dominant voice of Lahore's popular culture — played the female lead. The song appears in the narrative's parting register: Sahiban's farewell to a world she is about to sacrifice everything for. What makes the recording historically layered is context that the recording couldn't know. Within months of the film's release, the Partition of 1947 separated Bombay and Lahore permanently — Noor Jehan crossed to Pakistan, and her entire body of Indian work became, retrospectively, a farewell gift. The lines 'come, let me tell you the tale of separation' took on biographical weight they were never written to carry.

Mirza Sahiban is one of Punjab's four great tragic romances (Heer-Ranjha, Mirza-Sahiban, Sassi-Punnu, Sohni-Mahiwal), all of which end in the deaths of the lovers — making this film a natural vehicle for songs of separation and loss.

Noor Jehan's departure for Pakistan after Partition made her Indian recordings — including those from Mirza Sahiban and Jugnu — permanently her last; Indian film audiences heard the same songs but now as documents of a severed musical history.

The Mirza-Sahiban folk story is unusual among the four great Punjabi romances in that it places the blame for the lovers' deaths partly on Sahiban herself — who breaks Mirza's arrows to prevent him from killing her brothers, inadvertently allowing his enemies to reach him.
