Of the ten documented songs in Shri Krishnarjun Yudh, this is the only one that carries a singer credit in the surviving catalogues: Khan Mastana, the Agra-born singer-composer who was one of the busiest voices of the mid-1940s. 'Thakurai' means lordship, the condition of being a thakur, and the title is a question put to it — what kind of overlordship is this? In a film whose plot turns on a lord's vow being challenged by a woman's promise, a song that interrogates authority is not hard to place, though no source records where it falls.

Khan Mastana sings here for another man's score, which is worth noting because he was himself a composer: born Hafeez Khan in Agra, taught by his sitar-playing father, given his stage name by the music director Mir Saheb after his debut in Bahadur Kisan (1938), and handed his first composing assignment by Sohrab Modi on Vaseeyat (1940). By 1945 he was working across both jobs at once — Laila Majnu and Humayun both carry his name that year. Jagannath Prakash's setting for this song is otherwise undocumented, and no recording has been traced.

No lyricist is credited for this song in any catalogue consulted, so no attribution is made here. The line itself is doing something unusual for a mythological: 'thakurai' is a village-Hindi word for lordly power, not a Sanskritic one, and putting it in a question — ye kaisi — turns it into a challenge rather than a description. Whether that challenge is aimed at a human ruler or at divine authority is exactly the sort of ambiguity the genre used to say political things quietly in 1945.

Shri Krishnarjun Yudh was produced and directed by Mohan Sinha for his own banner, Murari Pictures, and dramatises the Puranic quarrel in which Krishna's vow to behead Chitrasen collides with Subhadra's promise to protect him, forcing Arjun to take the field against his closest friend. Prithviraj Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth, Shahu Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi, Menaka Devi and Rattan Bai are in the cast. Jagannath Prakash composed all ten documented songs; Yashodanandan Joshi and Safdar Aah wrote the lyrics that carry a credit.

No recording of this song is known to circulate today — it is absent from the streaming catalogues, from YouTube, and from the archival compilations of 1940s film music. What survives is the catalogue line: a title, a composer, and in most cases a lyricist. That is a common fate for the output of a small independent banner in the mid-1940s, when only songs that sold well as 78-rpm discs were repressed often enough to survive the decades that followed.
