Overview

An Amirbai Karnataki solo from the Amrapali (1945) soundtrack. Unlike the film's songs of departure and darkness, this one is written in the confident future tense — piya… rahenge, 'my beloved will stay with me'. In the devotional-adjacent vocabulary that Kavi Pradeep worked in, piya can be the human lover or the divine one without the line having to choose, which is a useful ambiguity in a story that moves from one to the other.

The Music

Medium tempo, settled rather than yearning. Saraswati Devi's writing across this score favours melodic economy over display, and a song of reassurance gets the least ornamented treatment of all: a steady rhythmic frame, a short repeating melodic phrase, and the singer allowed to sit in the middle of her range.

The Poetry

The grammar is the poem. Hindi love lyrics of the period overwhelmingly use the imperative or the optative — come, stay, do not go. Choosing the plain future indicative instead turns the song from a request into a conviction, and in a narrative about a woman who will eventually find something that does not leave, that conviction reads forward rather than back.

The Story

Amrapali (1945) was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal for Murli Movietone and drew on the legend of Amrapali of Vaishali, the celebrated nagarvadhu of the Licchavi republic who, in the traditional account, renounced her position and gave her mango grove and fortune to the Buddha's order. Sabita Devi, Prem Adib, Jeevan, Arun, Jagdish Sethi, Badri Prasad, Gulab and Sankatha Prasad are the documented cast. Saraswati Devi composed eleven songs for the picture to lyrics by Kavi Pradeep — one of the few soundtracks she wrote after leaving Bombay Talkies.

The Legacy

Like the rest of this soundtrack the song is preserved in the film-song catalogues rather than in circulation. Its interest is as part of the six-song Amirbai Karnataki set that makes up the documented core of Amrapali's music.

Margin Notes

Saraswati Devi — born Khorshed Minocher-Homji in 1912 to a Parsi family and trained in Hindustani classical music under Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande — is usually named the first woman to work as a music director in Hindi cinema, though Jaddanbai and Bibbo were composing in the same years. Amrapali is one of her freelance assignments after her Bombay Talkies years, which had produced the landmark score for Achhut Kanya (1936).

The film's lyricist Kavi Pradeep had been forced underground two years earlier: after 'Door Hato Ae Duniyawalon' in Kismet (1943) the British government issued a warrant for his arrest. He went on to write roughly 1,700 songs for some 72 films and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1997.
