The second Amirbai Karnataki and G. M. Durrani duet in Samrat Chandragupta, and the film's farewell number. The title addresses someone already in motion — 'o jaane wale', o you who are leaving — and asks not for a return but only for something said on the way out, which is the precise emotional shape of the vidaai song in Hindi cinema.

A slow duet built on alternation: in the standard 1945 arrangement the two voices do not blend so much as answer each other, with the orchestra reduced to a sustaining bed so the exchange stays legible on a shellac disc. C. Ramchandra's later signature — the counter-melody in an unexpected instrument — is not yet in evidence in his work for Jayant Desai's banner; the writing here belongs to the same wartime studio practice as his Manorama and Lalkar scores of the previous year.

The imperative 'kehta jaa' — say something as you go — is a small masterpiece of lyric economy, because it concedes the departure in the same breath as it makes its request. The speaker is not trying to stop anyone; they are trying to be left with something. Hindi film lyric returns to this construction constantly, and the reason is structural: a song can only occupy the length of a 78-rpm side, so the emotion has to be one that resolves inside three minutes, and a request for a parting word does.

Samrat Chandragupta (1945) was produced and directed by Jayant Desai for Jayant Desai Productions, the Bombay banner he founded in 1943 after fourteen years at Ranjit Studios. It is a large-scale historical about Chandragupta Maurya, founder of the Mauryan empire, built around the legend of his break with Alexander's Macedonians and his marriage to the daughter of the Greek general Seleucus Nicator. Ishwarlal, Renuka Devi, Suraiya, Nayampalli, Sulochana Chatterjee and Mubarak headed the cast; the screenplay was by Mohanlal G. Dave, Shaheed Latif and Sagar Hussain, and Dronacharya photographed it. C. Ramchandra — signing himself Chitalkar Ramchandra at this stage of his career — composed all ten documented songs to lyrics by Buddhi Chandra Agrawal 'Madhur', two years before Shehnai (1947) made him a household name.

The two Amirbai-Durrani duets are the only surviving evidence of how this soundtrack handled its male voice: G. M. Durrani appears on no other title in the film, so the male-vocal share of the score, as documented, is two duets and nothing else. That distribution — a female star carrying most of the songs, a male playback voice used only in pairing — was common in mid-1940s historicals and is one of the few things about this lost film's music that can be stated with confidence.
