मेरी सजनी सारंगी सी बोले

A duet by Shama and the classical vocalist Feroze Dastoor, composed by Bulo C. Rani alone, with words by Pandit Indra. The song catalogues carry it under the short title 'Meri Sajni'; the fuller line 'Meri sajni sarangi si bole' is preserved in Down Melody Lane's account of Bulo C. Rani's career, where it is named — together with 'Piya mera kewede ka phool' — as one of the two numbers he composed on this picture while sharing the credit with Khemchand Prakash.

Feroze Dastoor was a Kirana gharana khayal singer, a disciple of Abdul Wahid Khan, whose working life was the classical concert platform rather than the film studio; his appearances on a Bombay soundtrack are few enough to be worth noting individually. Pairing that trained voice with Shama in a duet is a deliberate choice by Bulo C. Rani, and a song whose title invokes the sarangi points to a semi-classical treatment — the sarangi being the instrument that shadows the voice in the classical vocal tradition. The arrangement itself is not documented and no recording is available.

Comparing a beloved's voice to a sarangi is a considered compliment rather than a decorative one. The sarangi is the instrument held to come closest to the human voice, and in Hindustani practice it accompanies the singer by following the vocal line rather than answering it — so to say that the sajni speaks like a sarangi is to say her speech is already music, and that it shadows the listener the way the instrument shadows a khayal. Placing that image in a song sung by a khayal singer of Feroze Dastoor's standing makes the comparison a professional one as well as a romantic one.

Prabhu Ka Ghar was a Ranjit Movietone social-religious drama of 1945 directed by Wajahat Mirza, with Khursheed and Trilok Kapoor in the leads. The Shama–Feroze Dastoor pairing appears twice on the soundtrack, on this song and on 'Piya Mera Kevade Ka Phool', and both are Bulo C. Rani compositions — which suggests the studio gave him a defined block of the score rather than scattered numbers. No print of the film survives and the picturisation is unknown.

No recording of the song circulates and it has never been reissued, but it is one of only two Prabhu Ka Ghar songs named in the surviving accounts of Bulo C. Rani's career — which is why its fuller title is recoverable at all when the catalogues carry only 'Meri Sajni'. For Feroze Dastoor, whose recorded legacy is overwhelmingly concert khayal, it is one of a very small number of film credits.
