मधुबन में राधा झूले हिंडोले

This is the best-remembered song of Prabhu Ka Ghar (1945) and the only one with any independent afterlife. Khursheed sings it, Khemchand Prakash composed it alone, and Pandit Indra wrote the words. It is a hindola or jhoola song — Radha on a swing in the groves of Madhuban, with Krishna — a seasonal devotional form with deep roots in Braj practice, where swinging the deity is an actual rite of the monsoon month of Shravan. The critic behind Songs of Yore, writing on the best female singing of 1945, singled it out as exactly the sort of Khursheed performance he values, noting that he had come across it on the radio rather than online.

Khemchand Prakash takes sole credit here, and the choice of form is his most legible decision: the hindola is a song built to imitate the motion it describes, so the melody is expected to swing — a phrase that rises, holds and falls back on a regular rhythmic cycle rather than developing forward. That circularity is what makes the type instantly recognisable and is a large part of why this number survived when the film's other Krishna songs did not. Khursheed's voice, trained enough for semi-classical shading but bright and forward in the film manner, is the exact instrument for it.

Madhuban is not a generic garden: it is one of the named groves of the Braj country, and 'Radha jhoole hindole' places the song inside the Jhulan Yatra tradition of the monsoon, when swings are hung for the divine couple and the community sings to them. The poetry of this form is not petition and not lament — it is celebratory description, the devotee watching rather than asking. Pandit Indra works the Braj vocabulary straight, which is what allows the song to be heard equally as a devotional piece and as a lyric about young love; the doubling is native to the tradition rather than an ambiguity the lyricist introduced.

Prabhu Ka Ghar was directed for Ranjit Movietone by Wajahat Mirza, who directed only about five films and is far better remembered as the writer of Mother India (1957) and the dialogue writer of Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Khursheed played the singing lead opposite Trilok Kapoor. No print of the picture is traceable and no plot summary survives, so how this swing sequence sat in the story is unknown — but the presence of four Krishna songs and a Gita setting in an eleven-song score indicates a film with a devotional argument at its centre.

Where the rest of Prabhu Ka Ghar has vanished, this number kept circulating: it remains in the Saregama catalogue and turns up in vintage-music radio programming, and it is the one song of the film that vintage-music writing has actually noticed. For a picture with no surviving print, one song still being played eighty years later is the whole of its public memory.
