Overview

Of the nine songs documented for Taramati (1945), this is the one that names the legend outright. HindiGeetMala lists the title in the short form 'Harishchandra Ka Vrat'; MySwar gives the fuller 'Harishchandra Ka Vrat Kabhi Na Tare' — 'Harishchandra's vow shall never be deflected'. The credit line is identical on all nine songs documented for the film: music by Ramchandra Pal and Keshavrao Bhole jointly, lyric by Mukhram Sharma 'Ashant'. No singer is named for any of them. Nothing beyond the title, the credits and the film's own listing survives: no recording of this song has surfaced, and HindiGeetMala carries neither a lyric nor a video link for it.

The Music

A declaration of constancy is a fixed form, and it asks for particular things from a composer: a melodic line that can be stated plainly and then returned to without variation, since the whole point of the lyric is that nothing about it changes. Songs of this kind in 1940s mythologicals usually sit on a steady, unhurried pulse and use repetition as argument rather than as decoration. Keshavrao Bhole, who shares the composer credit here with Ramchandra Pal, had built his reputation at Prabhat on exactly this sort of restraint — scoring for dramatic sense rather than for display. How any of that was actually realised on the record cannot be said: no transfer of the disc has been located, and no description of the performance survives.

The Poetry

The verb in the title is the ordinary Hindi 'ṭarnā' — to shift, to be put off, to give way — and choosing it rather than a Sanskritised alternative keeps the line in everyday speech: not 'the vow is inviolable' but 'the vow will not budge'. That plainness is the point. In the Harishchandra story the vow is not a grand abstraction but a series of ruinous, concrete refusals to take the easy option, made one after another as the king loses his kingdom, his wealth, his freedom and finally his wife and son. A title that says the vow 'will never budge' therefore reads less as praise than as a statement of terms — the cost is coming, and it will be paid. What the verses do with that premise is unknown; no lyric text of this song has been found, and none is reproduced here.

The Story

Taramati was directed by Raja Nene for Ramnik Productions and is entered in the Hindi film registers of 1945 simply as a mythological, with Shobhana Samarth at the head of the cast. Beyond that the picture is a blank: no print circulates, and no plot summary or contemporary review of it was found in any accessible source, so where this song fell in the film — whether the vow is declared by the king, sung about him by others, or invoked at the moment of greatest loss — cannot be recovered. What can be said is that a vow song belongs to the standard architecture of the Harishchandra story, alongside the invocations, the lament and the work song that the other eight titles indicate.

The Legacy

The song survives as a catalogue entry and nothing more — a title, two composers, a lyricist and a year, attached to a film nobody can now see. Its subject, though, has outlived every film made about it: the Harishchandra legend was the material of Dadasaheb Phalke's Raja Harishchandra (1913), generally regarded as the first full-length Indian feature, and has been filmed repeatedly before and since. Taramati's one distinction in that long line is the choice recorded in its title — the wife's name, not the king's.

Margin Notes

The film takes its title from the queen rather than the king: Taramati is the wife of Raja Harishchandra, who is sold into servitude along with her son when her husband gives away everything he has rather than break a promise. The same legend was the subject of Dadasaheb Phalke's Raja Harishchandra (1913), generally regarded as the first full-length Indian feature film — though that status has been debated, with some historians putting Dadasaheb Torne's Shree Pundalik (1912) first.

Not one of Taramati's nine songs carries a singer credit. HindiGeetMala gives each title its own page and fills in the lyricist and both music directors, but leaves the singer column empty on every one; MySwar's track listing does the same. Every song file for this film therefore has an empty singers array rather than a guess.

Wikipedia's register of Marathi films of 1945 lists Taramati as having been made simultaneously in Marathi and Hindi — the same bilingual method its director Raja Nene had used on Das Baje / Daha Wajta (1942), the film on which he, composer Keshavrao Bhole and lyricist Mukhram Sharma had all worked together at Prabhat.
