Ae Kamal Tu Ab Kya Nain Ko Bhaaye

Overview

One of only three Meghdoot songs whose singer is preserved in the catalogues, this is a Jagmohan Sursagar solo built on a conceit as old as Sanskrit poetry itself: the lotus, the standard measure of beauty, is told that it no longer measures anything, because the beloved has made the comparison useless. MySwar credits it to Jagmohan and classifies it as both filmi and sugam — light-classical — which is a fair description of where Kamal Dasgupta's writing sits throughout this score.

The Music

Dasgupta gives it a slow, held opening phrase that returns as the refrain, the melody circling back on the same rise each time the address to the flower is repeated — a structure that lets a single rhetorical gesture carry a full song. The accompaniment stays sparse behind Jagmohan's unforced middle register; at 3:12 in the Saregama reissue there is room for two developed verses and no instrumental display.

The Poetry

Addressing a flower and telling it that it has been surpassed is a standard move in Indian love poetry — the whole apparatus of lotus-eyes, lotus-face, lotus-feet exists to be invoked and then overturned. What makes the gesture work here is its politeness: the lotus is not insulted, it is simply told that the speaker's eyes have been re-educated. Inside a film built on Kalidasa, whose own descriptive method depends on exactly this stock of natural comparisons, the song reads almost as a commentary on its source — the poet's inherited images being tested against a particular face and quietly found insufficient.

The Story

Meghdoot was Debaki Bose's Kalidasa adaptation for Kirti Pictures, released in October 1945 with Shahu Modak and Leela Desai in the leads. Its soundtrack is one of Kamal Dasgupta's few Hindi film assignments outside HMV Calcutta, and Jagmohan Sursagar — the singer Dasgupta had been developing on record — carries three of the eleven documented songs, this among them. HindiGeetMala lists the title in the shortened form 'Ae Kamal Ab Tu Kya'; MySwar and Saregama give the fuller line.

The Legacy

The song has no independent afterlife of its own — it was never the record that travelled, and the film disappeared — but it survives complete on Saregama's 2017 digital reissue of the soundtrack, which is more than can be said for most 1945 Hindi film music. As one of the three surviving Jagmohan Sursagar credits from Meghdoot it is part of the small documented record of the singer's film work before he moved decisively into non-film geet.

Margin Notes

MySwar files this song under both 'Filmi' and 'Sugam' — the light-classical category — one of the clearest signs of how far Kamal Dasgupta's Meghdoot score sits from the Bombay filmi mainstream of 1945.
