Overview

The fullest of the eight titles listed for Hatimtai Ka Beta (1945), given by HindiGeetMala as 'Ae Mast Husn Kisse Seekha Hai Dil Lubhaana' and by the same eight-song set on MySwar, with singer and lyricist columns blank throughout; Cinemaazi credits Bulo C. Rani with the film's music. Unlike the film's other surviving titles this one is a complete rhetorical sentence — an address to beauty personified, asking who taught it to captivate hearts — and is almost certainly the song's mukhda rather than a fragment lifted from a middle verse. Nothing else about the number is documented: no recording circulates, no lyrics text is held anywhere, and no source names a voice.

The Music

The score is credited to Bulo C. Rani — born Bulo Chandiram Ramchandani in Hyderabad, Sind, in 1920, at Ranjit Movietone from 1939, and an assistant to Khemchand Prakash on Tansen and Sukh Dukh before he took films of his own. 1945 was the year he broke out: Moorti, which carried Mukesh's 'Badariya Baras Gai Us Paar', and Chand Chakori both belong to it. A fantasy picture for a small Bombay banner in the same twelve months is a useful reminder that a working 1940s composer's calendar did not separate the prestige assignment from the costume quickie. What this particular number sounded like, however, cannot be recovered — no disc, no print and no contemporary notice of it is known, so its instrumentation, its tempo and even the sex of the voice that carried it are all beyond statement.

The Poetry

The line's whole effect comes from a category error committed on purpose. Beauty — husn, the abstract quality — is addressed with the vocative ae as though it were a person, and then accused of having acquired a skill: from whom did you LEARN to charm hearts? Skills are learned; beauty is not supposed to be one. The mock-interrogation is a standard and much-loved manoeuvre of the ghazal, because it lets the lover pay the highest possible compliment while pretending to lodge a complaint, and it implies a teacher who is never named, leaving the listener to supply the only answer that flatters further — nobody taught you, or God did. In a costume fantasy the device would also have carried plot weight, since the Hatim dastan turns on riddles and on questions put to figures who cannot ordinarily be questioned. Whether this song exploited that parallel cannot be established: only the mukhda survives.

The Story

Hatimtai Ka Beta — catalogued in English as Son of Hatimtai — was a 1945 costume fantasy from Bharat Productions of Bombay, 122 minutes, certified U/A, directed by Nanubhai Vakil (Cinemaazi adds a second director, Dharam Kumar) with Sarojini, Navinchandra, Prakash, Ansari, Nariman and Azara Mumtaz in the cast. Its title attaches it to the dastan of Hatim Tai, the pre-Islamic chieftain of the Tayy tribe whose name became the Urdu byword for boundless generosity and whose seven quests were staple Parsi-theatre material long before Bombay filmed them in 1929, 1933, 1947, 1956 and 1990. 'Ka Beta' was not an adaptation but an invented continuation — the sequel habit that let a small banner reuse a proven property's sets, costumes and audience recognition without paying for a remake.

The Legacy

The song's afterlife is a blank column. Eight titles from this film survive in the HFGK-derived listings that HindiGeetMala and MySwar reproduce, and for all eight the singer and lyricist fields are empty. A production that carried eight numbers past the censor in 1945 has left behind not one identifiable voice. That is not a failure of this entry but its subject: the gramophone companies documented what they pressed, the B-circuit fantasy film was frequently not pressed, and so a measurable slice of 1945's musical output exists today only as a row of titles. Keeping the row on the record — accurately, with the empty fields left empty — is the one thing still worth doing for it, until a Geet Kosh page or a surviving disc says more.

Margin Notes

Read as a set, the film's eight titles fall into two clean registers: four in the courtly Urdu romantic idiom of the Parsi stage (the saqi, the arrival of spring, intoxicating eyes, youth as a season) and four that turn moral or devotional (a salaam to the Lord of the Faith, faith in every heart, a light shining across creation). The split is what a Hatim Tai picture was expected to deliver: the dastan is a morality tale whose hero's defining attribute, sakhawat, is generosity practised as a religious duty.

Nanubhai Vakil spent three decades remaking the Parsi theatre's silent-era material — Baghdad Nu Bulbul (1931), Baghdad Ka Badmash (1932), Baghdad Ka Chor (1946). He returned to this same property ten years later with Hatimtai Ki Beti (1955).

HindiGeetMala carries a page for this song but has never entered any lyrics for it, noting that the text has not been added because no audio or video of the number could be found — a rare case of a lyrics database documenting its own gap.
