Biography

Shamim, credited on song catalogues under this name, is identified with Shamim Bano (29 July 1920 – 23 October 1984), an actress-singer of 1940s Hindi cinema who — as was common in that era — sang playback for her own screen roles. Born in Lahore to a family that had relocated from Punjab, she began her film career in 1939 with Baghi and rose to prominence as the female lead opposite Dilip Kumar in his debut film, Jwar Bhata (1944).

She sang and acted in several films of the early 1940s, including Dhandora (1941), Pyaas (1941), Fariyad (1942), and Mehmaan (1942), and is remembered for the songs "Dil Ki Duniya Jo Luta Di Tere Diwane Ne" and "Kabutar Sandesa Liye Aa Rahe Hain" from Kidar Sharma's Armaan (1942), a film credited with helping bring singing actresses into mainstream Hindi cinema. Her other notable role was in Sindoor (1947), directed by Kishore Sahu, which dealt with the then-controversial subject of Hindu widow remarriage.

After the Partition of India in 1947, she migrated to Pakistan, where she continued a long acting career, winning two Nigar Awards for Best Supporting Actress (1958, for Zehr-e-Ishq, and 1961, for Ghalib). She was married to Pakistani film director-producer Anwar Kamal Pasha and was related to actresses Khursheed Bano and Meena Kumari. Her career spanned close to four decades, from 1939 to the mid-1970s, and she died in Lahore in 1984.
