Biography

Mohan Sinha (2 December 1903 – 1984) was an Indian film director, producer, and writer who was also credited as a lyricist on the song catalogues of several films he made. Born in Indore, he became one of the more prolific multi-hyphenate filmmakers of Hindi cinema's studio era, directing more than two dozen films between the late 1930s and 1960 through his own production house, Murari Pictures.

Sinha's directorial credits include Anuradha (1940), Omar Khaiyyam and 1857 (both 1946), Jal Pari (1952), Shahzada (1955), Panna (1956), Sultana Daku (1956), Ram Laxman and Jannat (both 1957), Aakashpari (1958), Chand Ki Duniya (1959), and Shaan-E-Hind (1960). He is widely credited with launching the screen career of Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi under the stage name "Madhubala" in November 1946, directing her as lead actress in five films — Chittor Vijay, Dil Ki Rani, Mere Bhagwan, and Khubsurat Duniya (all 1947), and Imtihaan (1949). He also helped launch the careers of actors Madan Puri and Jeevan.

Alongside his work as director and producer, catalogue and archival records credit Sinha as lyricist, story writer, and dialogue writer on several of his own productions, reflecting the multi-hyphenate role many director-producers of the era played on their own films. He died in 1984. His son-in-law was writer Pratap A. Rana, and his granddaughter, Vidya Sinha, became a leading Hindi film actress of the 1970s.
