प्रीतम

A 1942 social drama from the studios of the early sound era, directed by Mohan Sinha — who also wrote its lyrics — and scored by the music director Bhojak. The film paired Maya Banerji and Shyam Sunder in a story belonging to the moralistic social mould that dominated Hindi cinema between the talkie revolution and Independence. Like most films of this transitional period, Pritam carried its narrative on the back of seven songs.

The soundtrack, composed by Bhojak with all lyrics by director Mohan Sinha himself, ran to seven songs — among them 'Bansuri Aisa Kaun Bajaye', 'Tum Hans Do Dil Ki Rani' and 'Is Zamane Me Kisi Se Dosti Acchi Nahi'. No per-song singer credits survive in the standard catalogues, and the recordings themselves are not in wide circulation; the titles are preserved chiefly through gramophone-era song listings.

Pritam belongs to the vast body of 1940s social films that have largely faded from collective memory but together formed the commercial backbone of pre-Independence Hindi cinema. Its interest today lies less in its plot than in its documentation of Mohan Sinha as a writer-director and of the lesser-chronicled composer Bhojak, whose surviving song titles preserve a small fragment of an otherwise lost soundtrack.
