C. Ramchandra: The Composer Who Brought Cuban Rhythm to Hindi Cinema

In 1950, C. Ramchandra was scoring four films simultaneously. He borrowed Cuban rhythms, introduced the accordion to Hindi cinema, and created a musical revolution. This is that story.

From Pune to Bombay

Chitalkar Ramchandra — known to the world as C. Ramchandra — was born in Ambegaon near Pune in 1918. He learned music from childhood, worked in both Hindi and Marathi films, and by the mid-1940s was an important name in Bombay film music. But his most distinctive and daring artistic voice emerged fully in 1950, when he simultaneously scored several films with a musical approach that none of his contemporaries shared: Western instruments in Indian melodic structures, Latin energy in classical rhythmic frameworks, and sheer sonic joy as an end in itself.

During the recording of Samadhi in 1950, C. Ramchandra performed an experiment that would be discussed for decades. He took the melody of Cuban bandleader Edmundo Ros's 1945 hit 'Chico Chico' and transformed it into 'Gore Gore O Banke Chhore'. Borrowing from international music was common and accepted in the era — but C. Ramchandra's skill in naturalizing it into an Indian context was extraordinary. The rhythmic energy of the Cuban rumba and the earthy Hindi lyrics merged so seamlessly that nobody remembered the song had foreign origins.

The Accordion Arrives

In both 'Gore Gore O Banke Chhore' and 'Tinak Tin Tani', C. Ramchandra featured the accordion as a prominent melodic instrument — music historians cite these as among the earliest, possibly the first, uses of accordion in Hindi film music. The accordion — essentially a European folk instrument — sits strangely comfortably with Hindi melodies. Its reedy, slightly nasal sound carries both melancholy and celebration simultaneously, qualities that resonate with Indian folk music's temperament. C. Ramchandra recognized this — and that recognition permanently altered the Hindi film orchestra.

One Composer's Extraordinary Productivity

To understand C. Ramchandra's productivity in 1950 is bewildering to modern musicians. He simultaneously scored Samadhi, Sargam, Nirala and Sangram — at least four major films. Each film had 10-15 songs. This meant recording 4-5 new songs every month — and for each song, full orchestration planning, rehearsal, recording. And none of this diminished his creativity. 'Tinak Tin Tani', 'Gore Gore O Banke Chhore' — these are from the same year that Sangram and Nirala songs were also being recorded. Golden Era composers came from another world entirely.

Questions & Answers
· Did C. Ramchandra really borrow from foreign music?

Yes — 'Gore Gore O Banke Chhore' is well-documented as being adapted from Cuban bandleader Edmundo Ros's 1945 Latin hit 'Chico Chico'. Such borrowings were a widespread and accepted practice in Golden Era Bollywood, where composers freely adapted international melodies to Indian contexts. C. Ramchandra was particularly skilled at this cross-cultural synthesis.
