Sa Re♭ Ga♭ Ma Ga♭ Re♭ Sa — Pa Ma Ga♭ Re♭ Sa

Hanumatodi's note set is identical to Hindustani Bhairavi thaat. This characteristic phrase—the pivoting movement around Sa through komal Re and komal Ga, returning to Sa, then the cadential Pa-Ma-Ga♭-Re♭-Sa descent—is the defining gamaka-laden movement in Carnatic alapana and mirrors the emotion-saturated character of Bhairavi in the Hindustani tradition. Both traditions use this scale to convey karuna (pathos) and bhakti (devotion).

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Hanumatodi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Hanumatodi is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Hanumatodi melakarta (#8). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Compassion/Pathos (करुण), making it suitable for compositions that evoke melancholic, contemplative emotions. It is traditionally performed during morning hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Cultural Significance

Historical Significance

Hanumatodi is the 8th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, the second member of the Netra chakra (melakartas 7–12), the 2nd of the 12 chakras. It uses komal Rishabha (R1, 1 semitone), sadharana Gandhara (G2, 3 semitones), shuddha Madhyama (M1, 5 semitones), shuddha Dhaivata (D1, 8 semitones), and kaisika Nishada (N2, 10 semitones)—all four of the possible komal/altered swaras in the scale, making it one of the most tonally 'minor' of all melakartas. This note set is identical to the Hindustani Bhairavi thaat, making Hanumatodi one of the most significant cross-system equivalences in Indian classical music. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The name combines 'Hanuman' (the devotee-hero of the Ramayana) and 'Todi' (one of the ancient Carnatic parent ragas), suggesting a merger of heroic devotion and emotional depth. In Carnatic music, Hanumatodi is one of the most frequently performed and deeply revered melakartas, associated with profound bhakti and karuna rasa. The Trinity—Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri—each composed celebrated kritis in Hanumatodi, and its janya ragas include many beloved ragas of the Carnatic repertoire.

A Specimen Comparison

The two are note-identical — Sa Re♭ Ga♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ Ni♭ in both systems. What separates them is tradition and ornament: Hanumatodi uses fast Carnatic gamakas, janta prayogas, and kampita oscillations; Bhairavi relies on the slow, weighted meend and taan vocabulary of the Hindustani tradition. A performance of Hanumatodi sounds focused and energised in the upper-register phrases; a Bhairavi performance feels more expansive and emotionally saturated in the middle register.

Saveri is a pentatonic raga — Sa Re♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ — omitting Ga♭ and Ni♭ that Hanumatodi includes. The result is a lighter, more crystalline texture in Saveri. Hanumatodi's extra two notes (Ga♭ and Ni♭) give it greater capacity for pathos and colour.

Shares the same scale as Hanumatodi in many textbook treatments, but differs in its characteristic movements (chalan) — Ritigowla emphasises certain vakra (crooked) phrases and specific nyasa swaras that create a more devotional, almost ecstatic bhava, while Hanumatodi maintains a calmer, contemplative karuna.

In Film Music

Hanumatodi as a named Carnatic raga has no direct presence in Hindi film music. Its significance for the Hindi film world lies in a remarkable coincidence of scale: Hanumatodi's notes — Sa Re♭ Ga♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ Ni♭ — are note-for-note identical to Hindustani Bhairavi. This means every Hindi film song composed in Bhairavi draws on exactly the same tonal palette as Hanumatodi, though film composers, lyricists, and singers know it exclusively by the Hindustani name. Bhairavi is among the most beloved ragas in Hindi film music, appearing in devotional songs, farewell sequences, and items of deep pathos. Celebrated examples include the timeless ghazal 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo' (composed in Bhairavi, immortalised by Farida Khanum and later Asha Bhosle) and numerous early morning bhajans. For a listener who has experienced these songs, Hanumatodi will feel immediately familiar — the same melancholic tenderness, the same feeling of dawn breaking through sorrow. The difference is entirely one of tradition: Carnatic Hanumatodi deploys rapid oscillating gamakas (kampita, janta prayogas) that give it a devotional shimmer quite distinct from the languid meend of Bhairavi.
