In 1934 Himansu Rai and Devika Rani founded Bombay Talkies — a planned, European-style studio. In 1935 its first film, Jawani Ki Hawa, reached the screen: directed by the German filmmaker Franz Osten, photographed by Josef Wirsching. It was a mystery staged aboard a train, and with it the modern Indian film studio began its journey.

The story was woven in the Agatha Christie manner. Kamala flees on her wedding day with her childhood friend Ratanlal; her father catches them aboard a train. In the dusk's gloom a shot rings out and a body is thrown from the carriage. Devika Rani and Najmul Hasan played the leads, and their on-screen pairing would soon change history.

Behind the screen, a young man named Kumudlal Ganguly worked in the laboratory. The next year, when Devika Rani eloped with Najmul Hasan during the making of Jeevan Naiya (1936), Ganguly was suddenly pushed before the camera — and became Ashok Kumar.
