In early December 2024, Shashwat Sachdev sat in director Aditya Dhar's Delhi home studio facing a challenge that could keep any composer awake at night: creating music for a spy thriller that was serious in its themes — the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Pakistan's Lyari gang — while still entertaining audiences. Sachdev told Rolling Stone India: 'From the beginning, Aditya and I understood that Dhurandhar is a very serious film in its themes, but the audience should still feel entertained.' In pursuit of this balance, he decided to weave five decades of Hindi film music into a story being told in 2025.

Nearly a year before filming began, Sachdev composed the first melody — 'Gehra Hua.' The 6:02 ballad that would later become the album's emotional centrepiece in Arijit Singh and Armaan Khan's voices was initially just a melody in Sachdev's head. He tested its authenticity in an unusual way — by playing it to Aditya Dhar's young son. 'Children are the most honest critics,' Sachdev explained. 'If he responds, it means there's something in the melody.' Gehra Hua passed that test, and thus the first stone of the Dhurandhar soundtrack was laid.

Sachdev's most audacious creative leap was bringing Hindi film music's classics back to life in a 2025 spy thriller. In 'Ishq Jalakar (Karvaan),' he wove Sahir Ludhianvi's 1971 Karvaan poetry with Irshad Kamil's new verses — over Roshan's melody. In 'Run Down the City – Monica,' he layered Asha Bhosle's original voice from R.D. Burman's classic with Reble's rap verses on top. In 'Move – Yeh Ishq Ishq,' he brought Sonu Nigam's voice to Roshan's Barsaat Ki Raat (1960) classic. And in 'Ramba Ho,' he posthumously credited Bappi Lahiri (who died in 2022) while bringing Usha Uthup back to one of his own compositions. This wasn't nostalgia — it was a living, active dialogue with Hindi film music's history.

One of the album's most intellectually surprising creative decisions was 'Ez-Ez' — the three-voice track featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Hanumankind, and Sachdev himself. While composing it, Sachdev noticed an unlikely parallel: between Irish rebel folk music and the oral storytelling tradition of Karachi's Lyari gang culture — both rooted in displacement, solidarity, and outlaw mythology. 'I felt they both speak the same language,' Sachdev said. 'The language of rebellion.' By combining Punjabi dhol and tumbi with hip-hop architecture, he created a track that spoke across continents.

On December 5, 2025, Dhurandhar arrived in theatres. Within the first week, something unprecedented happened: all 11 tracks from the album charted simultaneously in Spotify's Global Top 200 — for the first time in Bollywood history. The title track was at #3, 'Ishq Jalakar – Karvaan' at #5, 'Gehra Hua' at #7. The full album debuted at #2 on Spotify's Global Top Albums chart, and at #5 on US Top Albums. Rolling Stone India called it 'a milestone in Indian film music history.' Bollywood Hungama wrote: 'Dhurandhar became the first Bollywood film to have its entire soundtrack listed simultaneously in Spotify's Global Top 200 chart.' This wasn't merely a chart achievement — it was proof that Hindi film music, when crafted right, can resonate globally.

The greatest achievement of the Dhurandhar soundtrack was not the virality of any single track — it was the philosophy it adopted towards Hindi film music. Shashwat Sachdev used the legacies of R.D. Burman, Roshan, Bappi Lahiri, and Sahir Ludhianvi not as museum pieces but as living tools. He brought back Asha Bhosle and Usha Uthup — their voices not digital reconstructions but actual vocal presences. He brought back Muhammad Sadiq and Ranjit Kaur — the original singers of a 1995 Punjabi classic — on the title track. In this process, the Dhurandhar soundtrack proved that the history of Hindi film music is not a burden but a strength — a living tradition that can enrich each new generation of composers, if they pick it up with both respect and courage.
