Between 1948 and 1952, Naushad Ali composed the music for some of the most significant films in Hindi cinema's history — Mela (1948), Andaz (1949), Dulari (1949), Babul (1950), Deedar (1951), Aan (1952). The creative explosion of these years established Naushad not merely as the most successful film composer of the era but as the first to be considered an artist in his own right rather than a craftsman serving the needs of the story.

Naushad came from Lucknow, from the same musical world that produced Talat Mahmood and the Urdu literary culture that would saturate post-independence Hindi film. His musical training was rigorously classical — he learned under Ustad Ghurbat Ali and spent years mastering Hindustani raga before entering films. This classical foundation shaped his compositional approach: he thought in terms of raga, tala and melodic development rather than in the light entertainment mode that had dominated the preceding decade.

But Naushad was also a populist. He understood that film music must reach audiences who would never attend a classical concert, and he developed a synthesis — raga-derived melodies arranged for orchestra in ways that preserved the emotional resonance of the classical tradition while remaining immediately accessible. His folk inflections were not decorative; he drew on genuine Uttar Pradesh folk melody and gave it formal shape without domesticating it.

The three films of 1948-1949 demonstrate three aspects of this synthesis. In Mela (1948), the rural folk dimension: a score that smells of earth and harvest, Mukesh's voice carrying the village romance. In Andaz (1949), the psychologically complex: three distinct vocal characters (Lata, Mukesh, Rafi) each carrying a different character's interior life. In Dulari (1949), the intimate-lyrical: Rafi's 'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki' as pure melody, the raga made popular without being stripped of its nocturnal quality.

Naushad's relationship with Mohammed Rafi was the era's most productive composer-singer partnership. Rafi was technically accomplished in a way that Mukesh was not — he could ornament, sustain, modulate with precision — and Naushad wrote for this capacity, giving him some of the era's most melodically demanding material. 'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki' is an example: the melody moves in long, arching phrases that require breath control and tonal consistency across a wide range. Rafi delivered it effortlessly and made it sound inevitable.

By 1950, Naushad was the dominant figure in Hindi film music — the composer other composers were measured against. His influence on the form of the Hindi film song (the mukhda-antara structure given classical weight; the orchestral interlude as emotional transition; the use of specific ragas to establish mood) was formative and lasting. Every subsequent Indian film composer worked in a tradition he had substantially shaped.
