The Last Songs of Saigal: Shahjehan as Testamentके.

K.L. Saigal died on 18 January 1947 in Jalandhar, aged 43 — younger than any other major death in Hindi film music history, and perhaps the most costly. The cause was alcoholic liver disease: a weakness that had threaded through his entire life and that he never overcame.
But in the final year, something extraordinary happened. After recording with Naushad for Mehboob Khan's Anmol Ghadi, Saigal recorded again with the same composer for Shahjehan — this time in the last months of his life. Naushad later recalled that Saigal's voice, already diminished by illness, had acquired a quality beyond technique: a transparency, a fragility, as if the column of air that made it was becoming hollow. Despite knowing he was ill, Saigal insisted on completing every session.
'Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya' and 'Gham Diye Mustaqil' are the products of those sessions. Both songs are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri — a newcomer, writing his first film lyrics. A strange convergence: the greatest singer of an old era performing the debut work of the most promising lyricist of a new one. When Shahjehan was released, Saigal was already gone.
The film is about a fictional Mughal emperor mourning the loss of his beloved. But when Saigal sings 'Jab dil hi toot gaya, hum ji ke kya karenge' — what is broken is not a fictional emperor's heart. Sometimes art and life come close enough that the line between them disappears.
