In the 1930s K. L. Saigal sang and India wept — Devdas (1935), Street Singer (1938), Tansen (1943). By 1944-45 his health was failing. In Jayant Desai's Tadbir (1945) he took the lead, with music by the then little-known Lal Mohammed and a 16-year-old Suraiya in her first substantial role. Listeners have argued ever since over whether 'Hasratein Khamosh Hain' and 'Janam Janam Ka Dukhiya Praani' were the singer narrating his own decline. On 18 January 1947, at just 43, the voice fell silent — and HMV's memorial compilations sold as nothing had before.

In the 1930s, when Kundan Lal Saigal spoke, people listened; when he sang, people wept. With Devdas (1935), Street Singer (1938), and Tansen (1943), he gave Hindi cinema songs that had never existed before. But by 1944-45, his health was faltering. Alcohol had taken its toll, and his lifestyle had left its marks. Those who met him in those final recording sessions later spoke of a glass sometimes present in the studio — yet in front of the microphone, he was the same Saigal he had always been.

In 1945, Jayant Desai made Tadbir — a Hindi social drama with Saigal in the lead. The music was by Lal Mohammad, a relatively obscure name who was immortalised by his collaboration with Saigal. Most interesting was Suraiya's presence — then just 16, and said to have been recommended for the role by Saigal himself. Saigal had an eye for talent, and in Suraiya he saw the spark that would illuminate an entire decade of Hindi cinema.

Among Tadbir's songs, 'Hasratein Khamosh Hain' and 'Janam Janam Ka Dukhiya Praani' stand out for their profound emotional resonance. 'Hasratein Khamosh Hain' — with Swami Ramanand Saraswati's verse — was a ghazal that seemed so aligned with Saigal's actual condition that listeners always asked: is this autobiography? Silent longings, powerless sighs, an exhausted heart — these words took on a different dimension when sung by a 40-year-old ailing singer at the twilight of his life.

On 18 January 1947, at just 43 years of age, Kundan Lal Saigal was gone. Born in Jalandhar, established in Bombay, discovered in Calcutta — he belonged to all these places and none of them exclusively. The HMV compilations released immediately after his death sold in unprecedented numbers. Mohammed Rafi, who revered Saigal as his ideal, later said that the news of Saigal's death brought tears to his eyes. Tadbir (1945) — one of Saigal's final major films — its songs were no longer merely songs; they became the farewell of a great voice.
