Talat Mahmood grew up inside Lucknow's ghazal culture and cut his first non-film recording in September 1941, but the road into films ran through Bombay. In Raj Laxmi (1945) he was given a small part as a wandering sadhu and sang 'Jaago Musaafir Jaago', composed by Robin Chatterjee to words by Suresh Chowdhury. The film's leads were established names — Kanan Devi and Zahur — yet it was Talat's tremulous, velvet voice over that Bhairavi melody that stayed with listeners, and that would later define the Hindi film ghazal.

Born in Lucknow in 1922, Talat Mahmood breathed the ghazal in that city's very air. Lucknow was the centre of Urdu poetry and refinement — and Talat absorbed that atmosphere into his voice. In September 1941 he made his first non-film recording — 'Sab Din Ek Samaan Nahin Tha' — and those who heard it knew this voice was something different: tremulous, clear, brimming with emotion. But to enter films, he had to go to Bombay — and Bombay's music marketplace was not easy.

In Raj Laxmi (1945), Talat was given the role of a sadhu — a wandering ascetic who stops a traveller to deliver a message of awakening. Robin Chatterjee composed the music and Suresh Chaudhary wrote: 'Jaago Musafir Jaago, Kholo Man Ka Dwar.' The film's main actresses were Kanan Devi and Jahar — established names. Talat was in a minor role, but his song... his song was different. In that Bhairavi melody and Talat's tremulous voice, there was a magnetism that lingered long after the film ended.

But talent and success have a gap between them that takes time to cross. After Raj Laxmi, Talat needed five more years. With Yateem (1950) and Aaram (1951), his voice finally reached a larger audience. Songs like 'Aaye Gham Lekar Chale' gave him overnight recognition. But that 1945 sadhu's song — 'Jaago Musafir Jaago' — was where the promise of that voice lay hidden, waiting to be fulfilled.

Talat Mahmood's voice is often compared with Mukesh and Rafi — but it was fundamentally different from both. Rafi had breadth; Mukesh had a nasal depth of sorrow; Talat had the velvet tremolo that came from the classical ghazal tradition. Mehdi Hassan once said that Talat's voice taught him what matters most in a ghazal — the convergence of sur (note) and bhav (feeling) that touches the listener from within. In 1945, 'Jaago Musafir' was the first lesson of that teaching.
