Dard (1947) is a milestone in Hindi film music history. Naushad's compositions and Suraiya's voice created a soundtrack that was an extraordinary synthesis of classical and popular. This is the story of the partnership that gave Hindi film music a new direction.

Naushad: A Composer at His Peak

Naushad Ali (1919-2006) was born in Lucknow — that city which is the capital of Hindustani music, Urdu poetry and refinement. Attracted to music from childhood, he came to Bombay in the late 1930s and, after much struggle, became a composer. After the successes of Rattan (1944) and Anmol Ghadi (1946), by 1947 he was among the most sought-after composers in Bombay. Dard (1947) was one of the most beautiful examples of his classical-popular synthesis.

Suraiya: The Rare Dual Talent

Suraiya (1929-2004) belonged to the rare category of artists who excelled at both acting and singing simultaneously. Most actresses of the era relied on playback singers, but Suraiya sang her own songs. Her voice — melodious, clear, full of emotion — was as powerful as her acting. When she sang on screen, there was no separation. Her role in Dard (1947) — as both actress and singer — is among her most remembered work.

Dard's Songs: A Night in Raag Yaman

Naushad composed several songs for Dard (1947) in Raag Yaman — the raag that symbolises night, romance and a sweet ache. 'Mujhe Dard-e-Dil Ka Pata Na Tha' and 'Afreen Afreen' — both carry Yaman's distinctive sweetness and depth. Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics gave Naushad's melodies an additional dimension. When Suraiya sang these songs, a trident was formed — words, melody, voice — that was 1947 Hindi cinema's most magical combination.

Uma Devi and an Unusual Journey

In Dard there was another singer who would later carve out a unique identity — Uma Devi. She sang emotional songs in Dard, but she would go on to become 'Tuntun', Hindi cinema's most beloved comedy actress. This is one of the most unusual career journeys in Hindi cinema history — a serious singer who became the queen of comedy.

1947's Dard: Still Fresh Today

Dard's (1947) songs are as fresh today as they were 77 years ago. The classical foundation of Naushad's melodies has made them timeless. Suraiya's voice — with its simultaneous innocence and depth — still touches the heart the moment you hear it. Shakeel Badayuni's lyrics, which contain the entire tradition of Urdu love-and-pain poetry, are still as meaningful. Dard was the film made in the upheaval of 1947's independence and partition that created a lasting beauty.
