Kilki kilki uthat dhaay girat bhoomi latpataay
Dhaay maata god let Dashrath ki raniyan
Thumak chalat Ramachandra baajat painjaniyan
Aanchal raj ang jhaari vividh bhaanti so dulaari
Tan man dhan vaari vaari kahat mridu bachaniyan
Thumak chalat Ramachandra baajat painjaniyan
Vidrum se arun adhar bolat mukh madhur madhur
Subhag naasika mein chaaru latkat latakaniyan
Thumak chalat Ramachandra baajat painjaniyan
Tulsidas ati aanand dekh ke mukharavind
Raghuvar chhavi ke samaan raghuvar chhavi baniyan
Thumak chalat Ramachandra baajat painjaniyan
Giggling and laughing, he runs and falls on the ground, stumbling
His mothers and Dashrath's queens rush to lift him
Ram walks with a toddler's waddle, his anklets tinkling
They wipe the dust from his little limbs, caressing him in many ways
Sacrificing body, mind and wealth, they speak gentle words to him
Ram walks with a toddler's waddle, his anklets tinkling
His lips are red as coral, his sweet mouth speaks sweetly
From his beautiful nose hangs a charming little ornament
Ram walks with a toddler's waddle, his anklets tinkling
Tulsidas is filled with supreme joy seeing his lotus-face
None can match Ram's beauty — Ram's beauty is unparalleled
Ram walks with a toddler's waddle, his anklets tinkling

The Monographपरिचय Overview

Thumak Chalat Ramchandra is from the Gitavali of Goswami Tulsidas — not the Ramcharitmanas but the bhajan collection — and it depicts baby Ram learning to walk, his anklets tinkling, his mothers watching with delight. It is among the most beloved of all Hindi bhajans. D.V. Paluskar's HMV recording of the mid-1940s sets the text in Yaman Kalyan with a Gwalior clarity that his father Vishnu Digambar Paluskar (artist-vishnu-digambar-paluskar) had established as the standard for devotional classical singing in north India. The recording became the reference version.
The Music

Yaman Kalyan's evening character — expansive, shimmering, the tivra madhyam lifting every phrase — creates a sense of a world large enough to contain both divine joy and human devotion. D.V. Paluskar's voice, clean and bright in the Gwalior tradition, gives the baby-Ram scene an innocent authority.
The Poetry

Tulsidas's bhajan is remarkable for depicting Ram as an infant — a deliberately humanising image in a theological tradition that can become abstract. The detail of the anklets, the stumbling, the mothers rushing — these are the specific sensory images that make the devotional abstract concrete.
The Story

The recording was made less than a decade before D.V. Paluskar's premature death at 34 in 1955. His father Vishnu Digambar Paluskar had made 'Raghupati Raghav' the anthem of the independence movement; D.V. Paluskar's version of this companion bhajan carried that devotional legacy into early independent India.
The Legacy
