Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram was Mahatma Gandhi's most beloved bhajan — sung at every prayer meeting of his ashram and at the Dandi March of 1930. The version with the 'Ishwar Allah tero naam' stanza was Gandhi's ecumenical contribution: Hindu Ramayana devotion meeting Islamic divine names in a single breath. D.V. Paluskar's HMV recording from around 1948 — the year of Gandhi's assassination — carries this convergence as a profound historical weight. His father Vishnu Digambar Paluskar had famously sung 'Vande Mataram' at the 1923 Kakinada Congress; D.V. Paluskar's recording of Gandhi's favourite bhajan in the year of Gandhi's murder completed a family arc.

D.V. Paluskar sets the bhajan in a steady, clear Kafi — the raag of communal affection and social harmony — with clean Gwalior sargam in the introductory alap before the composition. The pace is devotional: slow enough to feel each phrase, fast enough to maintain momentum. His voice in 1948 was in its full maturity: clear, bright and ringing.

The bhajan's theological audacity — placing 'Ishwar' (Hindu) and 'Allah' (Islamic) as synonymous names of the same divine — was Gandhi's practical theology in miniature: not syncretism but the recognition that the divine is one and names are human constructions. Set to music by his own musician's son, it became the sonic emblem of the Independence movement's spiritual dimension.

Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948. The bhajan he sang at every prayer meeting became in the weeks and months following his death a song of national mourning. D.V. Paluskar's recording in this year and the years immediately following carried that grief. The recording was also consistent with the mission of Vishnu Digambar Paluskar (D.V.'s father) — to place Hindustani classical music in the service of national life.

Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram remains one of the most widely sung bhajans in India, and D.V. Paluskar's version is the classical benchmark. It is sung at Independence Day ceremonies, school prayer sessions and political gatherings. The 'Ishwar Allah' stanza remains Gandhi's most widely disseminated theological statement.
