Overview

The second of the two K.L. Saigal–Suraiya duets in Tadbir (1945), composed by Lal Mohammad to Swami Ramanand Saraswati's words. In a song list otherwise given over to fate, sorrow and prayer, this is the celebration: a call to open the doors because the day of meeting has come. It is the only title in the film whose mood is unambiguously joyful.

The Music

A duet built on an invitation, which in the film-song grammar of the 1940s meant a moderate, forward-leaning tempo and a melody with a returning refrain that two voices could trade. The pairing of Saigal, whose vocal manner was famously unhurried, with a fifteen-year-old Suraiya on a celebratory number is a more unusual combination than the film's slow duet. No documentation of the arrangement survives.

The Poetry

The address 'rani' — queen — is the ordinary affectionate honorific of North Indian village speech rather than a literal title, and 'khol de apne dwar', open your doors, sits in the vocabulary of arrival songs sung at a threshold: at weddings, at a bride's homecoming, at the reception of a deity. Adding 'milan ka din aa gaya' names the occasion outright. Whether the meeting in question was a wedding, a reunion or a homecoming cannot be established, because no synopsis of the film survives. No lyric text is reproduced here.

The Story

Saigal's Kanhaiyalal and Suraiya's Saguna are the film's couple, and this is the number the song list marks as their high point. Tadbir went on to be the fifth-highest-grossing Indian film of 1945; whatever narrative resolution this celebration belonged to has not been recorded anywhere accessible.

The Legacy

It is listed in the catalogues under several transliterations — 'Raani Khol De Apane Duaar', 'Milane Ka Din Aa Gaya' — which is one reason the film's song count is reported inconsistently in secondary sources.

Margin Notes

One blog summary of the film refers to this song simply as 'Milne Ke Din', treating the second half of the title as the title — one of several transliteration variants in circulation.

It is the film's only openly celebratory number; apart from Naseem Akhtar's light 'Banke Naina Se', the remaining sides are laments, prayers or philosophical addresses.
