पट्टिका-लेख
The Monographपरिचय Overview

One of five K.L. Saigal solos in Tadbir (1945), composed by Lal Mohammad to a lyric by Swami Ramanand Saraswati. The title states the speaker's position with no ornament at all: I am one whom fate has struck, God. In a film whose very name means the effort a person makes against destiny, this is the moment the effort is set aside and the argument taken upstairs. It is exactly the register — a plain, unliterary Hindi address to God, sung slowly — in which Saigal had already made some of his most reproduced records.
संगीत The Music

This is one of the film's slow devotional-complaint numbers rather than one of its ghazals, and the difference is audible in the vocabulary of the title alone — Hindi, direct, and addressed upward. Lal Mohammad's setting had to fit a single 78-rpm side, so the melodic material is compact by necessity. Saigal's technique in this kind of song is well described in the accounts of his singing: a low, conversational placement, minimal ornament, and the weight put on the words rather than on any display. Nothing about the actual instrumentation of this recording is documented, and none is asserted here.
काव्य The Poetry

The construction 'kismat ka mara' is one of the oldest self-descriptions in North Indian speech — literally 'struck by fate' — and it carries no self-pity in ordinary usage, only a statement of standing. Placing 'Bhagwan' immediately after it turns the phrase into a vocative: the speaker is not describing himself to the audience but presenting himself to God, in the posture of someone laying out a case. That is why the song belongs so exactly to a film titled Tadbir. Tadbir is what a man does; taqdeer is what is done to him; and this lyric is spoken from the moment when the first has run out. The verse is not reproduced here — the lyricist's dates are unknown, so the copyright term cannot be shown to have ended.
कहानी The Story

Saigal plays Kanhaiyalal in Jayant Desai's production, with Mubarak as Jwalaprasad and Suraiya as Saguna. No plot summary of Tadbir survives in the reference literature, so the scene this song accompanied cannot be described. What the surviving song list does show is a pattern: of the twelve documented sides, five address God or fate directly, and four of those five are Saigal's. Whatever the story was, its emotional weight was carried by the male lead's arguments with providence.
विरासत The Legacy
यह गीत एक स्वतंत्र मानक के रूप में नहीं, सहगल की संपूर्ण रिकॉर्ड-सूची के हिस्से के रूप में याद रखा जाता है: यह उनकी समग्र रिकॉर्डिंग्स की सूचियों और सहगल-संग्रहों में मिलता है — और यह उन्हीं कुछ पक्षों में से है जिनके ज़रिये अन्यथा अ-प्रलेखित लाल मोहम्मद आज भी सुने जा सकते हैं।

The song is remembered as part of the Saigal discography rather than as an independent standard: it appears in the catalogue listings of his complete recordings and on Saigal collections, and it is one of the sides by which the otherwise undocumented Lal Mohammad can still be heard at all.

रोचक तथ्य
Margin Notesफ़िल्म का शीर्षक 'तदबीर' उर्दू का वह शब्द है जिसका अर्थ है वह युक्ति या प्रयास जो मनुष्य अपना जीवन गढ़ने के लिए करता है, और परंपरागत रूप से इसे 'तक़दीर' के सामने रखा जाता है — वही विरोध जो इस गीत का शीर्षक खुलकर कहता है।

The film's title, tadbir, is the Urdu word for the contrivance or effort a person makes to shape their own life, and is conventionally paired against taqdeer, destiny — the opposition this song's title states outright.
'तदबीर' के बारह प्रमाणित पक्षों में पाँच कुंदन लाल सहगल के एकल हैं — फ़िल्म में किसी एक कलाकार का सबसे बड़ा हिस्सा।
