The Monographपरिचय Overview

Catalogued in Hindi Film Geet Kosh under the fuller title 'Aayi Rangraliyon Ka Zamana Le Kar Mast Jawani Aayi', this is the best-known surviving number from Din Raat (1945) — a jawani song, the standard mid-1940s form in which the arrival of youth is greeted as a season that has come bearing revelry with it. Its singer credit is contested. The printed Hindi Film Geet Kosh, hindigeetmala and myswar all credit the film's two leads; the HFGK record at hamraaz.org credits Rajkumari; and the researcher who posted the surviving audio in 2023 wrote that it is plainly a female solo and the voice 'unmistakably Rajkumari', filing the post under her name. This entry follows the recording and the HFGK record.
The Music

The tune sits squarely in Dada Chandekar's theatre-trained idiom: a bright, forward-moving melody in a comfortable middle register, carried by harmonium and tabla with a light string group filling the gaps, and structured so that the mukhda returns often enough to lodge in the ear after one hearing. There is no elaborate orchestral prelude and no instrumental showpiece — the arrangement exists to keep a single voice buoyant, which is exactly what a 1940s celebratory number was expected to do.
The Poetry

Santokh Nadim writes in the plain Hindustani that Navyug's audience could sing back, and builds the lyric on one of Hindi film poetry's oldest conceits: youth as an arriving season. Jawani does not simply happen to the speaker — it comes, the way spring comes, carrying rangraliyan (revelry, colourful pleasures) with it as a season carries weather. The device does two things at once. It makes the celebration impersonal and therefore permissible on screen in 1945, since it is the season and not the singer who is being immodest; and it plants the counter-thought that a season also passes, which is why songs of this type so often turn melancholy in their last antara.
The Story

Din Raat was a social drama produced by Navyug Chitrapat Ltd. of Poona, the company Master Vinayak joined after Hans Pictures closed, and directed by Shori Daulatavi. Snehprabha Pradhan and Paresh Bannerjee led the cast, supported by Sulochana Chatterjee, Vasant Thengdi, Feroza and Dar Kashmiri. How this song was staged is unknown: no print of the film survives, and the researcher who posted the recording in 2023 asked readers outright for information about the picturisation and received none. All that can be said with certainty is that the number sits in the film's brighter register, opposite the abandonment lament 'Hansne Walon Ko Rulaoge' sung by Snehprabha Pradhan.
The Legacy

The song's afterlife is a case study in how contested the standard reference works can be. Hindi Film Geet Kosh is the authority for pre-1950 Hindi film music, and in print it records this number as a Snehprabha Pradhan–Paresh Bannerjee duet; the online uploader of the recording reproduced that credit faithfully, and hindigeetmala and myswar carry it too. But the audio is a female solo, and researchers who can compare it against the film's documented Snehprabha Pradhan solo and its documented duet argue the voice is Rajkumari's — the same singer credited on two other songs in this very film. The HFGK record now published at hamraaz.org credits Rajkumari here as well. The clash between the printed catalogue and the databases on one side and the recording plus the online HFGK record on the other has never been formally resolved, and it stands as a reminder that for films of this obscurity the catalogue, not the recording, is usually the only evidence anyone consults.

The printed Hindi Film Geet Kosh lists this as a duet by Snehprabha Pradhan and Paresh Bannerjee, but the surviving recording is a female solo; the researcher who documented it in 2023 called the voice 'unmistakably Rajkumari', and the HFGK record published online credits her too.

The uploader who put the recording online reproduced HFGK's singer credit verbatim, so the disputed attribution has been copied forward from the printed catalogue into every digital listing of the song.
