रक़म इतनी मिल गई

Among Zid's eight titles this is the only one whose subject is not love, absence or reproach: rakm is a sum of money, and the line reports that so much of it was received. That places it in the situational or novelty category rather than the romantic one — the kind of number a 1945 score used for a comic turn or a plot beat. hindigeetmala and myswar both credit it to Sunder, who is in the cast and who would go on to a long career as a comic actor; how the song functioned in the film is not documented.

Not documented. Situational songs of the period were usually set to a brisk, speech-adjacent metre over dholak with minimal melodic ornament, so that the words carried; whether Chishti did that here cannot be verified, and the description is offered as period practice, not as a claim about this record.

Putting a bare transaction into a film lyric is itself the joke: rakm belongs to the ledger, not to the song, and the comedy of such numbers in 1940s cinema comes from singing in the vocabulary of accounts about something that is never really about accounts. The words that followed the title are not preserved, so what the money was for — a bribe, a dowry, a debt, a windfall — is unknown and is not guessed at.

Zid was directed and photographed by H. S. Rawail for Shree Bharatlaxmi Pictures in Calcutta, with Ramola as its leading lady. Its score of eight G. A. Chishti songs is unusual for the period in how heavily it rests on one voice from the cast: six of the eight, this one included, are credited to Sunder.

Untraced beyond the catalogues. Its interest is documentary: it is the entry that shows Zid's score was not uniformly a romantic one, and that Sunder was already being handed the film's lighter material a decade before he became a fixture of Hindi screen comedy.
