Biography

Dada Chandekar, born Shankar Vishnu Chandekar on 19 March 1897 in Kolhapur, was among the earliest music directors of Hindi and Marathi cinema. His father performed keertan (devotional singing) in temples and played the harmonium, and Dada himself grew up learning the instrument. Financial hardship led him to join the Kirloskar Natak Company as a young performer, and he later spent about twenty years as harmonium accompanist with Deenanath Mangeshkar's Balwant Sangeet Natak Mandali — the theatre company run by the father of singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Chandekar entered films as an assistant to composer Dhamman Khan on the early Marathi film Kaliya Mardan, taking over as music director on that production when Khan departed. In 1937 he joined Huns Pictures, scoring films including Jwala (1938) and Brahmachari (1938), and went on to compose for Hindi films such as Brandy Ki Botal (1939), Ghar Ki Rani (1940), Amrit (1941), Moti (1947), Main Tera Hoon (1947), and Phool Aur Kaante (1948), alongside roughly twenty-five Marathi films through the early 1960s. He also worked for All India Radio, Poona, for a period. Film-history sources credit him with giving singer Lata Mangeshkar her first opportunity to sing for a film, in the Marathi production Pahili Mangalagaur (1942). Dada Chandekar died on 27 January 1976 in Poona.
