Overview

The most celebrated song from Kapal Kundala (1939), 'Piya Milan Ko Jana' is a devotional-flavoured composition in Bhairavi that draws on the virahanī tradition — the woman separated from her beloved, longing for union. In the film, the song carries the doubleness of Kapal Kundala's character: she is of the forest, longing for connection; her devotion is both human and transcendent. Pankaj Mullick sang his own composition, giving the piece the quality of an artistic confession.

The Music

Mullick's Bhairavi setting is gentler than the raga's more anguished mode — this is yearning without aggression, a long vowel held over a tableau. The sarangi fills the silence between phrases as a second voice, present but unable to speak.

The Poetry

The Braj Bhasha text places the song in the thumri tradition of feminine longing but the tone is more devotional than amorous — 'piya' (beloved) carries both human and divine address simultaneously.

The Story

Kapal Kundala (1939) was directed by P.C. Barua for New Theatres and was based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1866 Bengali novel of the same name. The story concerns Kapal Kundala, a woman raised by a Tantric ascetic in a forest who knows nothing of social convention; when she is brought into civilization through marriage, she is caught between forest freedom and domestic constraint. Pankaj Mullick played the male lead, Nabakumar — a navigator whose encounter with Kapal Kundala sets the tragedy in motion. His decision to also compose and sing the film's music, while acting in it, was unusual even by New Theatres' standards, where singer-actors were common but full actor-composer-singers were rare. The song 'Piya Milan Ko Jana' — 'Going to meet my beloved' — is formally in Kapal Kundala's emotional register but sung in Mullick's voice: a transposition that gives the longing a doubled quality, neither purely male nor purely female, which suited the film's thematic concern with boundary-crossing. The production was shot during a period of transition at New Theatres as Saigal prepared his departure for Bombay, and Mullick was increasingly the studio's primary musical identity.

The Legacy

Pankaj Mullick's dual role as actor-composer-singer in this film — and the lasting quality of this specific song — is cited as evidence of his artistic independence within the New Theatres system. The song circulated as a standalone bhajan recording beyond its film context.

Margin Notes

Kapal Kundala (1939) was the third film adaptation of Bankim Chandra's novel — earlier silent versions had been made in 1929 and earlier; the 1939 sound version is the most celebrated due to Pankaj Mullick's music.

P.C. Barua directed the Hindi version of Kapal Kundala; he had also directed the 1935 Devdas with K.L. Saigal — making Barua-Mullick and Barua-Saigal two of New Theatres' most productive creative partnerships.

Pankaj Mullick (1905–1978) studied music under Dilip Kumar Roy at Santiniketan and later under Ustad Rahimat Khan; this classical foundation gave his film compositions a melodic rigour distinct from many contemporaries.

The lyric credit for 'Piya Milan Ko Jana' remains ambiguous — Mullick may have written it himself or may have worked with an uncredited writer, a common arrangement in New Theatres' internal production system.

The thumri-bhajan fusion style Mullick employed in this song — Braj Bhasha text, Bhairavi scale, sarangi accompaniment — was a New Theatres stylistic signature that he carried into his post-1940 Bombay work.
