The Monographपरिचय Overview

The best-remembered number from Apna Paraya (1942), 'Pardesi Ghar Aaja' is a 'come home, traveller' lament that fits the film's plot of a man returned from England and the wife he left behind. Sung by Rajkumari — one of the most prominent female playback voices of the early 1940s — to Pandit Indra's lyrics and Anil Biswas's composition, it survives as one of the few commercially pressed sides from the film. The song belongs to the durable 'pardesi' tradition of Hindi film music, the address to an absent beloved across distance.
The Music

Anil Biswas frames the lament in a slow, harmonium-and-strings setting typical of his early-1940s National Studios manner, keeping the orchestration restrained so that Rajkumari's voice carries the emotional weight. The composition leans on a plaintive, song-led melody rather than rhythmic drive — the period's preferred vehicle for the 'pardesi' separation song.
