The Monographपरिचय Overview

Among the most frequently noted songs of Pardesi (1941), this Khursheed solo is built on a ghazal-like conceit of regret — the wish that one had refused love before being wounded by it. Composed by Khemchand Prakash to D.N. Madhok's Urdu-inflected words, it sits at the more literary end of the film's score.
काव्य The Poetry

D.N. Madhok was at the height of his Urdu-inflected lyric writing when Pardesi (1941) was made. The title phrase — 'had I refused love at the very first' — belongs to a long tradition of Urdu poetry in which the speaker mocks his own romantic capitulation. The 'inkaar' (refusal) that did not happen is the poem's pivot: the counterfactual that reveals how deeply the heart was pierced. Madhok worked in what he called the nazm-ghazal crossover space — songs that had the internal logic of ghazal but the narrative sweep of film drama. In this song the regret is addressed inward, to the self, rather than to the beloved — a signature Madhok device he would refine across the decade. The sustained grammatical subjunctive ('kiya hota' — had I done) gives the song its grammatical and emotional distinctness, making even the title grammatically an act of sorrow.
कहानी The Story

Pardesi (1941) was a Ranjit Movietone production directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi — the same director who would make Bhakta Surdas (1942) for the same studio. The film starred Motilal opposite Khursheed, a pairing Ranjit had refined across multiple productions; Motilal's debonair screen persona balanced Khursheed's musically trained voice to good commercial effect. Khemchand Prakash, who composed the score, had received rigorous grounding in classical North Indian music under his father Bhagwandas Prakash, and he shaped this song as a measured, ghazal-influenced number. The recording was pressed for HMV Calcutta in the standard studio format of the period, with harmonium, tabla and bowed strings. Pardesi was one of the commercial successes of its year and the song was a standout in what became a strong Khursheed solo showcase.
विरासत The Legacy

Pardesi (1941) was one of the films that established Khursheed Bano as a leading feminine voice in Hindi cinema. The song 'Pahale Jo Mohabbat Se Inkaar Kiya Hota' became associated with her particular gift for melancholic introspection, a quality she would employ to maximum effect in Tansen (1943) alongside K.L. Saigal. Her alliance with Ranjit Movietone through this and related productions helped define the romantic film idiom of the early 1940s. Khemchand Prakash's reputation as a composer of restrained, classically informed slow numbers also received a boost — a reputation that would grow through his subsequent work in Bombay for Filmistan and other studios. D.N. Madhok's 'inkaar' motif later appeared in variant forms in his work for other films, this song functioning as an early template.
