Overview

An Amirbai Karnataki number from Shyam Sundar's twelve-song score for Gaon Ki Gori (1945), built on the classic village image of the koel calling the season in while the beloved remains far away. Song listings derived from the Hindi Film Geet Kosh credit Amirbai with a second, unidentified female voice; the MySwar catalogue notes the track may carry as many as three uncredited female singers, which fits a picture whose surviving reels are indexed for their harvest and fair sequences.

The Music

Shyam Sundar keeps the setting deliberately thin — dholak, harmonium and a flute line that answers the singer the way the koel answers itself across a field. The melody is pitched for open-throated folk delivery rather than ornament, and the second voice enters as an echo rather than a counter-melody, a device Punjabi and Braj work-songs use to make a solitary complaint sound like a village's shared one. Amirbai Karnataki, whose Karnataka origins never stopped her from becoming one of the most convincing north-Indian folk voices on record, sings it plain.

The Poetry

Wali Saheb writes inside the barahmasa convention, the seasonal calendar-poem in which a woman measures her separation month by month against what the natural world is doing. The koel's call is that tradition's standard messenger: it announces that the season has turned and therefore that the absence has lasted a full cycle. Calling the absent man 'raja' rather than by any tenderer word keeps the address slightly formal, the way a village woman speaks of a husband in front of others, and the word 'pardesi' — one who has gone to another country — carries the specific economic weight it had in 1940s Punjab, where labour migration emptied villages of young men.

The Story

Gaon Ki Gori was the second highest-grossing Indian film of 1945, directed by K. Amarnath for Ramnik Productions with Noor Jehan, Durga Khote and Nazir in the leads. Amirbai Karnataki, who had been one of the busiest playback voices in Bombay since Kismet (1943), takes three of the album's twelve songs — this one, the bhajan-shaded 'Bansi Ki Madhur Dhun Se' and 'Saiyan Salone Se Nain Mila Ke' — dividing the film's non-heroine singing with Noor Jehan. The Indiancine.ma print of the film indexes two separate harvest-song sequences, which is the visual world this song belongs to.

The Legacy

This is not one of the film's remembered songs — the Noor Jehan solos took that place — but it survives in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh listing and in collector catalogues as evidence of how a 1945 village picture opened its musical world before the heroine's voice arrived. Amirbai Karnataki's career was itself near its commercial peak here; within five years the arrival of Lata Mangeshkar had displaced her generation of playback singers almost entirely.
