नेहा लगा के जो कोई यूँ छुप जाए

"Neha Laga Ke Jo Koi Yun Chhup Jaaye" is a Zohrabai Ambalewali and Amar duet from Sanyasi (1945), music by Naushad, lyric by Pandit Madhur; both the hindigeetmala listing and the Wikipedia soundtrack table agree on the pairing. Two transfers survive on archive channels, running around two and a half to two and three quarter minutes, one of them with several thousand plays — modest numbers that nonetheless make it one of the better-heard sides of the film.

The two voices are set close together in register here rather than contrasted, which makes the song read as a shared complaint instead of an argument between two positions — a choice, not an accident, since Naushad's other duet on this album separates the singers into full alternating phrases. The tempo is a moderate lilt with dholak clearly audible under the line, the folk-rhythm bed Naushad had been using since Rattan. The recording is a single continuous 78 side with no instrumental introduction of any length; the voice enters almost immediately, as commercial practice of the period demanded.

'Neh' or 'neha' is the Braj and eastern-Hindi word for affection or attachment — softer and more domestic than the Persianate 'ishq', and belonging to the same devotional-folk vocabulary as the film's bhajan. The construction of the title is conditional and general: 'one who forms an attachment and then hides away like this' — it does not accuse a named person but states a type, which is the polite Hindi way of accusing someone directly. Setting that phrasing as a duet doubles the effect: both singers are describing a third party, and both know who is meant. The rest of Pandit Madhur's verse is undocumented and is not quoted here.

Naushad and A. R. Kardar had been working together since Nayi Duniya (1942), the film that first gave Naushad the credit 'music director'; the arrangement let Naushad take outside assignments, which is how Rattan (1944) — made for Jagdish Productions, not Kardar — became the hit that reset his fee. Sanyasi is the film he made for Kardar immediately after, and it ran a Silver Jubilee. Their partnership went on through Shahjehan (1946), Dard (1947), Dillagi and Dulari (1949) before ending with Deewana (1952).

Of the eight Sanyasi sides that have been digitised, this is among the two or three most played, which is a real if small distinction for a 1945 film that has otherwise disappeared from circulation. It is a useful record of what an ordinary — not celebrated — Naushad duet sounded like in the year between Rattan and Anmol Ghadi, when the style that would dominate the next fifteen years was fully formed but not yet famous.
