नसीबा

Naseeba is a song from the Black Warrant (2025) Netflix original series — a seven-episode crime drama set inside Tihar Prison, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh. Composed by Ajay Jayanthi with lyrics by Anvita Dutt and performed by Devenderpal Singh, Naseeba embeds the philosophical question at the series' moral core: is the fate of every Tihar inmate — or jailer — written, or was it chosen? Dutt's Punjabi lyric draws on the folk tradition of the dard-bhari awaz (voice heavy with pain) to give the prison drama its most introspective sonic moment.

Ajay Jayanthi's score for Black Warrant draws on north Indian folk textures appropriate to the series' 1981 Tihar setting. 'Naseeba' leads with tumbi — the single-string plucked instrument central to Punjabi folk music — creating an immediately grounded, earthy sound before guitar and ambient strings add depth without urbanising the track. The sparse arrangement matches the series' unfussy visual style: institutional, patient, honest.

Anvita Dutt — whose lyric credits include Bulbbul, Qala, and other literary Hindi films — brings unusual poetic precision to a Punjabi folk idiom. 'Naseeba' functions less as narrative and more as meditation: it does not tell a story of a specific prisoner but evokes the philosophical position of all of them. This universalising strategy is formally appropriate for a prison drama where every inmate carries a different story to the same destination.

Black Warrant was released on Netflix on 10 January 2025. The soundtrack album — featuring Naseeba and Pagg Vich Raakhi Da — was released separately on 15 February 2025. Devenderpal Singh, a singer with roots in Punjabi classical and semi-classical traditions, was identified by Ajay Jayanthi as the right voice for music set inside a prison where most inmates are from Punjab or UP.

Naseeba and its companion piece Pagg Vich Raakhi Da together established Anvita Dutt and Ajay Jayanthi as a creative pairing capable of writing songs that function simultaneously as story-extensions and standalone musical statements — a standard rarely achieved in OTT series soundtracks.
